Skiathos Mini Guide
Skiathos is the ideal holiday location with its stunning beaches, great nightlife and quaint Greek villages. The island of Skiathos is part of the Sporades Islands which are located to the north of Athens
and the south of Thessaloniki
Along with Agios Konstantinos and Volos, Thessaloniki is one of the places from which it is also possible to get the ferry to Skiathos. Skiathos is very popular with tourists and accordingly there are some great bars and night clubs there which certainly exceed expectations for such a small island.
Skiathos is also a great place to go out for a meal. The people are all very friendly and you are sure to find some excellent food in the restaurants around the harbour and dotted along the coast. One Skiathos speciality to try is the grilled octopus which is truly a delight. Once you have finished eating there are many little shops to stroll around where you can get ice cream, souvenirs or gifts while admiring the boats at the marina.
Skiathos Airport is in the north of the island near the town of Chora and the airport code is JSI. During the summer there are plenty of charter flights to Skiathos with companies such as Thomson but the rest of the time you fly to Skiathos via mainland Greece with Olympic Airways.
When you arrive at Skiathos Airport Rhino Car Hire representatives will meet you and show you to your vehicle. You may want to consider requesting an off road jeep or land rover because there are some fun dirt track paths to drive around in the interior of the island where you can make the trip to visit beautiful old monasteries and churches. Although of course most people go there to swim and sunbathe while there is also the possibility of taking small boats out for the day.
It is best to go to Skiathos in the spring before the start of the tourist season if you are not a person who likes crowds. At that time of year you will be able to find great accommodation deals in very quiet areas where you may even end up having a beach more or less to yourself.
Some of these bays which are surrounded by forests and hide secluded beaches are blissful. If you are lucky you may even get to see a pod of dolphins start to swim as the sun sets.
