Lindos Mini Guide

Isn’t Rhodes Just Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n Roll?
Whilst there are parts that you wouldn’t want to be seen in unless you’re fond of Burberry, burgers and beer, there are some lovely parts of Rhodes and one of the very best is Lindos. It’s a medieval town with a huge preservation order on it that prevents ugly building work and most of the town is traffic free with the fun access to the town via donkey!

How do I get to Lindos?
You should get a flight into Rhodes International Airport from any of the major UK airports. Many European airports fly here too. Once you arrive at the airport you can get the cheap bus for the 45 minute journey or arrive in style on the boat from Mandraki harbour in Rhodes town.

What can I see in the Town?
There are the important ruins of the Acropolis and the Temple of Athena, both of which are very interesting. There’s a great view from the Acropolis that makes the climb worthwhile. On the way up to the Acropolis you’ll pass the old walls of the town built by the crusaders. There are also the ruins of the old castle. In the town itself, the renowned Captain’s houses are worth seeking out for their charm and architectural importance.

What Else can I do?
You can just spend some time wandering around the pedestrianised streets of the old town or look out over the bay where St Paul was shipwrecked. Finally you can spend quality time soaking up the sun on one of the best beaches on the island below the town.

What is There to eat?
There are no real specialities of the town but there are a number of creperies which serve delicious savoury or sweet crepes. Additionally there’s an excellent barbecue restaurant called Acropolis which serves delicious local meat marinated before being flamed.

What Should I Shop for?
There are a lot of stalls and shops selling souvenirs based on the town’s donkeys and religious connections. Stuffed, china and bronze donkeys in various sizes can be purchased as well as icons of St Paul, models of shipwrecks and crusader knight figurines. There’s also the pottery sold in almost every Greek speaking country across the Med and the ubiquitous canvas bags with pictures and slogans that seem funny on holiday but lose their appeal on your return. Most of it is tat but appeals to some.

Partying in Lindos?
Unlike Faliraki and Rhodes town, the clientele here dictate the nightlife and whilst there are three clubs including an outdoor one, the scale of partying is quite tempered. Many tourists simply want to sit in the rooftop restaurants and watch the sunset and the moon rise. With the elevation of the town you can often look down on other restaurants below you.

Latest Update from Lindos:

11/05/12 - This summer there is an extensive list of performances at the town's Acropolis. Whilst you'll be able to hear many of them from across the town, nothing beats being in the crowd. Check out hotel notice boards and the local tourist information for what's on during your stay.

Lindos is more like the Rhodes you would hope to see on a visit to the island. An ancient city with quiet streets, friendly locals and the occasional donkey which bring a Mediterranean sleepiness to the place. Walk up to the stunning Acropolis for wonderful views across the bay or pay your respects at the temple of Athena.

When you’ve done with history, sip a quiet drink at the picturesque harbour and then relax on the pretty, sandy beach. In the evening, take your seat at one of the rooftop restaurants and watch the sun set and the moon rise.
