You may think that Versailles is only about the palace but the city of Versailles has many other fascinating sights to visit. Don’t forget that the entire city was there to serve the king and his many needs so you’ll also be able to find the castle that defended the city, the king’s vegetable garden and not too far away, the Place de la Concorde where he had his enemies beheaded.



How do I get to Versailles?
The city is now mainly absorbed into the Parisian suburb of Ile de France where once it was a standalone city. It is some distance from the capital’s main airports but an efficient railway system links it with important transport hubs and other parts of the capital. If you take the train to Versailles’ Rive Gauche Station you can collect a pre-booked hire car there for your time in the city.

What are the Station and the City Like?
The station is large, clean and full of facilities. You’ll find an arcade of shops, laid out like a mall together with many places to eat. There are a couple of small banking outlets as well as ATMs on the concourse.



The city loses its appeal soon after you leave the area around the palace. Despite there being many sights to be seen, most of Versailles today is a busy, polluted neighbourhood with too many modern buildings obscuring the historic gems.
