Quimper Mini Guide
During your trip, you can experience and explore more of Quimper using a hire car from Rhino. The relaxed setting and the highlight of the city is to climb aboard a boat and drift along on what is arguably known as 'the prettiest river in France' at Benodet estuary. Whilst you are visiting you may be in time for the 90 year old tradition of the Festival de Cournouaille. Being Quimper's age old jamboree it gets better every year.
Theatre and dance shows including Breton music is a wonderful sight. Taking place on the 4th Sunday in July the weather is usually warm and have long daylight hours. Performers from many Celtic countries come and join in as well as many other strange and wonderful acts from the world. Similar to the Festival de Cournouaille, is the Semaines Musicales. Taking place in the compact yet character 19th century cathedral it rarely gets advertised fully. Taking place over the first three weeks in August, the performances are generally classical music with a majority of French composers such as Debussy, Berlioz, Poulenc and Bizet.
Typically the quaint streets of Quimper are lined with many unique boutiques but strangely near the cathedral there are few restaurants. Towards the north side of the river there are many to make up for it. Park up and stroll along taking in the aromas of fine French cuisine.
Try L'Ambroisie; a lovely little upmarket French restaurant. Whilst not having a huge menu, what they do have is very chic. Other restaurants include Le Capucin Gourmand, having gourmet French food on the menu, again not a large choice but ample. La Krampouzerie is situated on rue de Salle, selling crepes and having a wonderful view of the square from its outdoor seating arrangement.
