Karup Airport Mini Guide

Where is Karup Airport Near?
Karup Airport serves the municipality of Viborg of which the city of Viborg is the biggest settlement. The city is one of the oldest in Denmark having been an important Viking settlement from the 8th century helped by its central position within the country. The name of the city which means ‘holy place on a hill’ is likely to refer to the city’s cathedral built in the 12th century but which has been ravaged by fire many times since so that all that remains of the original is part of the crypt. The cathedral contains many paintings by Joakim Skovgaard and there’s an interesting museum dedicated to the artist next to the cathedral.

How do I Get to Karup Airport?
You can take a connecting flight to Copenhagen from London before continuing on to Karup with Norwegian Air Shuttle. The airport is only minutes from the centre of Viborg and close to other towns and villages in the area. Transport into the city is easy with the company Midttrafik offering a bus route into Viborg and Hostelbro whilst the Teletaxi company can also get you to the city.

Karup Airport

What is the Airport Like?
Four flights operate daily to Karup bringing nearly 200,000 passengers a year. The airport is owned by the adjacent municipalities and has a new and beautiful terminal building made predominantly of glass and constructed in 1997.

What Should I do When I Arrive at Karup?
As mostly small aircraft land at Karup, there are no air bridges and so you’ll have a short journey down the aircraft steps to the terminal building. After passport control you’ll be in the area where you’ll collect your luggage and soon walk through into the arrivals hall. All the facilities you need are found in this area including an ATM for cash withdrawals and the offices of the three car hire companies which are at the far end of the hall. If you need help at all with airport matters, there is an information desk which can give advice. If your luggage is delayed or damaged you should report it to the handlers who have offices along the wall of the terminal.

What are the Facilities Like for Departing Passengers?
Facilities are minimal with an airport café serving light meals but unusually the airport has a take away catering service supplying meal boxes for passengers to take on board their flight. There is no duty free shop at Karup but there is a small selection of shops including a newsagent which also sells confectionery and a small gift shop. It’s hoped that more concessions will be added in the near future as passenger numbers grow.

Latest Update from Karup Airport:

20/05/12 - Disaster almost struck Karup Airport on the 3rd May this year when Cimber Sterling, the airport's only operator, went bust. Thankfully for Karup, only hours earlier, Norwegian Air Shuttle had announced that they were intending to operate four daily flights to Copenhagen.

Karup Airport is a great entry point for discovering this area of northern Denmark. The main city nearby is Viborg which is also one of the oldest in the country being established by the Vikings in the 8th century as its central position exerted great influence over the surrounding lands.

Some evidence of the city still exists and the story of the Viking town is told in the city museum. The city is also well known for its cathedral which has undergone several instances of rebuilding following devastating fires over the centuries.
