St Johns Airport Mini Guide

What can you Tell me About St John’s?
St John’s is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador and is acknowledged to be North America’s oldest city. In its time it has been French, Dutch and British before becoming part of Canada. Its wealth was built upon the cod fishing of the North Atlantic which collapsed in the 90s before its popularity resumed with the discovery of oil and gas off the Canadian coast. Today it is a fast growing city with commercial importance and growing tourism based on Americans tracing their roots back to the early days of American settlement.

How can I get to St John’s?
St John’s has an airport located nearly four miles from the city centre. Transport to St John’s can be by public bus, taxi or rental car. The airport accepts flights from all over the North American continent, the Caribbean and there’s a daily Air Canada flight to London Heathrow.

What is the Airport Like?
The airport is very modern having had its new terminal opened less than a decade ago. There is a good range of facilities including free Wi-Fi, internet kiosks and self-service check-in desks. The terminal is compact with plenty of parking. The airport’s charter reveals that it puts customer satisfaction high on its list of priorities and satisfaction surveys show that it is achieving its aims.

What Should I Expect When I Arrive at St John’s?
The airport has four air bridges to let you disembark straight into the terminal. Domestic arrivals come in on the second floor into a small arrivals area which leads into the security section. You’ll need to go down a level to the baggage reclaim area and then look out for your reclaim belt number. On the first level you’ll find international arrivals and the airport information desk just as you exit the baggage reclaim. Further along on the left are the car hire booths where you’ll be able to collect your pre-booked vehicle rental. If you need cash, there’s an ATM opposite the main terminal entrance.

What About When I Leave St John’s for my Journey Home?
If you’re tech savvy, you can use the self-service check-in booths designed to ease congestion at the check-in desks.  Once that element of your homeward journey is completed you can spend your time looking through the airport shops. There’s a good selection selling travel essentials and gifts, especially of a local nature. There are also some fashion stores selling local labels. Restaurants at the airport offer a good range of meals from full steak and grill menus to pizzas and light snacks. Past security you’ll find cafes and bars plus snack vending machines. Once you’ve finished with the shops and eateries, the airport offers free wireless internet plus internet terminals for passengers.

St Johns Airport (YYT) is an international airport which serves the St. Johns metropolitan area in Canada. The airport was conceived in 1939 as a way of providing security to newfoundland in case the province came under attack from the Germans.

Having car hire in St Johns Airport is a good idea as the airport is located some six kilometres outside of the city centre. All of the flights planned from St Johns Airport are regional services to other cities in Canada and Air Canada is one of the main carriers. There are also a couple of helicopter charter services.
