Bourgas Airport Mini Guide
What can you Tell me About Burgas?
Burgas is a commercial city on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. It is not renowned as a tourist destination in itself but as the gateway to many tourist sights close to the city. Bourgas is in a beautiful location with mountains framing the background interspersed with three large lakes whilst the city fronts the Black Sea shore. Further along the shore are many four and five star resort hotels but the key attractions in the area are the beautiful traditional villages of Sozopol and Nesebar. Within the city, the best attraction is the Sea Park which separates the city from the shore and which is home to hundreds of plants and trees and from which steps lead down onto the sand. The park has several bars, cafes and restaurants that prove very popular with tourists and locals.
How Would I get to Burgas?
Burgas Airport is found on the outskirts of the city with efficient, good value methods of getting into Burgas. Many hire a car from the airport to be able to visit the sights which are beyond walking distance and this can be arranged before you fly. The airport handled well over two million passengers last year and accepts year round scheduled flights from many European destinations including Luton in the UK. Charter airlines complement this service during the summer months taking tour operator’s clients to the resort hotels.
What is Burgas Airport Like?
The airport is currently very crowded as it is constantly running at over capacity. This is because of a huge rise in holidays to Bulgaria by budget conscious Western European tourists. A deal has been struck to expand and modernise the airport over the next few years and passengers will have to put up with some inconvenience over this time.
What Should I Expect When I Arrive in Burgas?
When your plane lands you may disembark via air bridges or you may have to walk to the terminal building – it depends on your airline. Inside the terminal building you’ll go slowly through passport control and into the main arrivals hall. The help desk can advise you on all matters to do with the airport and also assist people with mobility issues. If you need cash, a branch of International Currency Exchange plc operates at the airport and once you have cash in hand, you can track down your pre-booked hire car at the company desks in the arrivals hall. Public transport is excellent from the airport but hiring a car is a convenient way to reach your accommodation and still have an independent means of accessing the local sights.
What is Burgas Airport Like for Returning Passengers?
The airport is a little slow at checking people in due to the high volume of passengers travelling from Burgas. Once that’s out of the way you can only get food from McDonalds as the remaining two ‘food’ outlets are a coffee bar and an ice cream parlour. Shopping is equally limited with a duty free shop having a wide range of goods and a Bulgarian gift shop.
- Bourgas Airport is rapidly expanding in terms of passenger numbers with an over 30% increase in passengers in the last two years. To cope with continued increasing demand, the aiport is currently building a new terminal as part of a 500m euro upgrade and expansion. The terminal is due to come online in winter 2013.
