Rio de Janerio Airport Mini Guide
Rio de Janeiro’s Airport is mostly known as Galeao International Airport. However its full name is Rio de Janeiro/Galeao-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport! It is named after Praia de Galeao (Galleon Beach), which is opposite the old passenger terminal and also the Brazilian musician Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is Brazil’s largest airport and is the 2nd busiest.
How can I get There?
The airport is used by over 30 airlines, with direct flights to most of the major hub airports in Europe and the USA. There are also many flights connecting Rio with cities all over South America
How do I Reach the City After Landing at the Airport?
The airport is situated 20km north of Rio de Janeiro city. There is an airport shuttle bus, that stops at the major hotels and beaches, taking approximately 45 minutes. To reach the city centre, you can take the bus 2018 from the airport to the Central Bus Station. You can buy tickets at the arrivals and in both terminals. If you wish to drive, there are 2 highways that connect to the city, Linha Vermelha and Avenida Brasil, this would take between 30-60 minutes depending on traffic.
What Facilities Does the Airport Have?
Information desks can be found in Terminal 1, on the second floor and in Terminal 2 in departures, should you need any assistance at the airport. There is also a tourist information desk in the arrivals area - they can provide you with maps, leaflets on attractions and details of local transport. You will also find a 24 hour hotel reservation desk, if you need to make a last minute booking.
For your money needs there are banks, ATMs and currency exchange desks in Terminal 1. If you have booked a Rhino hire car, you will find the car hire desks in the arrivals area, where a representative will be waiting to greet you.
What can I eat There?
Terminal 1 has a range of restaurants for you to choose from. In Terminal 2, there is a commercial area where you will find restaurants, bars and cafés.
Are There any Shops?
You will find a variety of outlets in Terminal 1 and the commercial area in Terminal 2. Whether you are looking for a book to read on your journey, sun cream for the beach, a local gift for a friend or your favourite fragrance, you will find it here. Duty free shops are available in both terminals and there is a pharmacy in Terminal 1, for any little emergencies.

There are 2 hotels on-site at Terminal 1, if you need to be close to the airport. The Luxor Hotel is on the 3rd floor and has a business centre, restaurant, fitness centre and internet access. It has 4 stars and 62 deluxe rooms. Alternatively, on the 1st floor there is the 3 star Hotel Pousada Galeao, which offers limited services, but in an ideal location if you have an early flight, night flight or transferring at the airport.

Wheelchairs can be provided at the airport, if you have reduced mobility. Transportation can also be arranged between arrivals/departures and the aircraft.
