Maceio Airport Mini Guide

What Can you Tell me About Maceio?
Maceio is a coastal city in the east of Brazil. The city was originally founded on the export of timber and the production and processing of sugar cane. Today Maceio makes use of its gorgeous beaches to attract income from tourism and has become one of the most popular beach resorts in the country, appealing to both Brazilians and international sun worshippers. The sea off Maceio is also gaining popularity with surfers for its consistent and clean waves plus the range of facilities available around the beach fringes. Visitors to Maceio often comment on the unique culture of the city, expressed in music, art and local crafts meaning that if you’re not a surfer and get bored of the beach, there’s still plenty to do.

How do I get to Maceio?
If you’re flying in from overseas you have to go to a major international airport such as Rio, for despite its name, Zumbi dos Palmares International Airport currently has only domestic flights. The airport is sixteen miles from the city and the journey between them can be made by the local bus, Tropical Line, which runs regular services during the day to Green Point, taxi or hire car.

What is the Airport Like?
Zumbi dos Palmares underwent major renovations in 2005 turning it into a modern airport with good facilities. Four air bridges were added for passenger convenience and the internal layout was adapted to cope with international flights.

What Should I Expect When I Land at Maceio?
You’ll disembark via the air bridges onto the upper level of the terminal and go down a level to the baggage reclaim area. There, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the sense of space and also the facilities. There is a branch of Confidence Exchange should you need currency, plus several ATMs. There’s an information desk should you need it and a branch of Setur Tourist Information which can help with onward travel and accommodation. Rhino Car Hire’s local agents, Avis, operate through Dallas Car Hire at the airport and their desk is indicated by the overhead illuminated sign.

What Can I do Whilst Waiting for my Plane?
The airport is very proud of the art exhibition at the airport showcasing the talents of artists in the Maceio region. Much of the art is available to buy and can be packed ready for shipment for you. The airport is also home to the Aeroshopping mall which can accommodate 67 outlets of which over half are currently occupied. There you can buy books, clothes, gifts, handicrafts and products that have a maritime theme. Restaurants are not quite as varied in choice and range from a cafeteria, Spoleto, selling hot and cold light meals, Fast Food Bob’s whose name says it all, a sandwich bar and an ice cream vendor.

Maceio has got to be one of the most beautiful cities on earth with stunning beaches fronting the city and crystal clear water in hues of emerald and sapphire. The city grew on the strength of the sugar cane industry but now uses the full might of its natural beauty to woo tourists seeking an elegant and vibrant beach resort.

The city is also home to the Festa Junina which combines the feast day of Saint John with the winter solstice and includes processions, fireworks, street parties and great food, taking place over the period of a fortnight.
