Avalon Airport Mini Guide
Who Flies to Avalon Airport?
Domestic travellers can often get cheaper flights to Avalon Airport when compared with Melbourne’s main airport. Jetstar and Sharp Airlines both offer budget flights which make up for the fact that Avalon is a good 45 minutes outside Melbourne. Others use it as Geelong
and Avalon are good bases for exploring Melbourne but without paying city rates for hotels. The countryside around the two towns is also very attractive making it a pleasant place to stay.
How do I get to Avalon Airport?
All flights to Avalon Airport are domestic; from Portland, Brisbane
. Whilst Brisbane has some international flights, to get from Europe and the UK
it’s best to take the BA or Qantas flight from London Heathrow
to Sydney and connect there. Travelling from the airport into Melbourne or Geelong is less complicated if you hire a car and collect it from Avalon Airport. Geelong should take you about fifteen minutes with Melbourne up to an hour depending on the traffic.
What is the Airport Like?
It’s the second busiest that serves Melbourne and last year saw nearly a million people pass through its doors. The airport is quite basic despite being important in Melbourne’s transport infrastructure. There was a plan to introduce international flights two years ago and in return the government were to pay for a new terminal but the plans are still on hold. Other plans have replaced it and the airport is awaiting a final decision on new infrastructure, following the announcement that the airport is now designated as Melbourne’s second airport.
The airport prides itself on being family friendly and has a kid zone for them to play in, child friendly facilities and children’s meals at the High Flier restaurant to help ease the stress of parents. The restaurant serves a range of hot and cold meals and afterwards you can spend some time in the airport gift shop where you can pick up the latest novels, buy last minute gifts and grab some duty free goods too.
