Extra departure tax will help fund Greek airport improvements

UK holidaymaker’s love travelling to Greece and thousands of us visit both the Greek mainland and the beautiful Greek Islands year on year. However most of us would agree that the regional airports are long over due a makeover; they need modernising and in some cases increasing in size.

Greece is planning to tackle this problem by charging a slight increase on the current departure fee of €12 for holidaymakers. Starting in 2017 passengers will be charged a fee of €13 and this could rise to €18 by the end of the project in 2020.

Fourteen airports will benefit from the extra funding in total, three airports on the mainland: Thessaloniki, Aktion and Kavala and eleven on the popular Greek islands including, Crete, Corfu, Kos, Rhodes and Santorini. Holidaymakers should benefit from the funding being put in place and it is hoped it will help bring the airports up to optimum levels and in line with other European countries.

On the whole the increase in departure tax is being seen as a positive thing and a good way of providing much needed investment to the airports, which should ultimately benefit Greece as customers increasing are looking for the complete holiday package, including a modern airport.

There is however concern among some regarding Fraport, the company that is in charge of the development of the fourteen airports. The worry is that the infrastructure will be increased, but that the airports will be empty during the quieter months and as a consequence taxes and fees will need to be raised. This is turn could lead to a decrease in passenger numbers flying into Greece.

Overall the slight increase from €12 to €13 is seen as having positive outcomes for Greece and its travel industry. With the planned investment totalling €330 million we will eagerly wait to see the planned modernisation of the 14 said airports.
