With respected UK travel guru Simon Calder including Geneva Airport
in ‘The five worst airports in the World’ article what other options are there for travelling to the alpine resorts this season? We take a look at some other nearby airports that might suit you better, offer cheaper flights and a better all-round experience. They might be a little further to resort, but car hire is readily available and you might find yourself in resort sooner than you think with less fuss.
Lyon Airport (LYS)
Approximately 50 miles south west of Geneva it offers excellent access to all the French alpine resorts such as Tignes, L'Alpe d'Huez, Val Thorens, Megève and La Plagne. Served by Easyjet, Aer Lingus, BA, Flybe and Monarch it’s easy to grab a cheap flight.
Even closer to Geneva and the popular French resorts, Grenoble is a great option if you can find a suitable flight. Easyjet, Flybe and Ryanair operate routes here, but it’s less well connected than Lyon.
Over the border into Italy, Turin is also very close to some of the top alpine resorts with Tignes about the same distance from Grenoble. Jet2 offer a seasonal service from Manchester and Ryanair connect from London Stansted whilst Easyjet operate from Gatwick. Thomas Cook also operate here so it’s worth looking for flight options.
Milan Malpensa airport
is just on the limit of the 150 mile range to the resorts, however in a hire car that’s a few hours at most so hardly out of reach. It’s the biggest airport on our list so you’re likely to find a range of flights here so a worthy contender. BA, BMI, Easyjet, Ryanair, Flybe and Aer Lingus all have extensive services to MXP. Access to Zermatt and Saint Moritz are easily within driving distance too.
It’s quite a drive from Zurich to reach the main alpine resorts but not impossible. Of course there are many resorts in Austria
worthy of consideration including Zermatt, Solden, Kitzhuhel and Zell Am See so access to top resorts is
Luckily for Geneva, it’s not the only high profile airport to make the list, Paris’ Charles de Gaulle and Rome’s Fiumicino, both capital city airports made the list
