Major airlines have at last confirmed flights to the long awaited Murcia-Corvera Airport
(Región de Murcia International Airport to give it its full title) in the Murcia region of Costa Calida in southeastern Spain
. Currently served by Murcia’s ageing San Javier Airport, the new state of the art airport has been plagued with delays, largely politically driven. Whilst the airport has lay dormant since 2016, the political wrangles have finally abated and the region will soon enjoy the benefits of the new facility.
San Javier Airport is preparing for its final summer serving passenger flights, its 25 routes from 9 airlines from 7 European countries will come to end in 2018 with routes transferring to Corvera Airport from 2019. Easyjet has confirmed it will transfer its routes from San Javier to Corvera as of January 2019, whilst Jet2 will land its aircraft on the new runway from March 2019. Easyjet are not currently taking booking for flights (as of 27/06/2018) to San Javier beyond December 2019, however neither are they offering seats to Corvera Airport (RMU), but this is likely to change shortly when routes / times are confirmed. Ryanair pulled it’s routes to Murcia in 2015 but have resumed for summer 2018 and is expected to confirm it’s transfer of services to Corvera shortly. Murcia-San Javier is a shared civil / military facility and will revert to exclusive military use, as such there is likely to be a rolling schedule for the transfer of all operations, but it’s widely expected that all passenger routes will be allocated to Corvera for the peak holiday season in 2019.

1st April 2019
Murcia-San Javier is expected to handle over 1.1 million passenger movements during the summer season of 2018, one of the major reason for the development of the new Corvera Airport which is designed to handle 3 million passengers each year. It is expecting to operate a significant increase in routes / passengers in its first year as airline and tour operators look to fill the slots in this increasingly popular location. Alicante
and Malaga Airport
currently handles a lot of the passengers that would otherwise head straight to Murcia and Corvera Airport is intended to relieve some of that pressure. Direct access via a new motorway onto the A30 from Corvera Airport to the coastal resorts guarantees easy access for passengers.
