There is still hope for some teams who have got off to a poor start and suffered first rounds defeats, however the future is not looking very bright for pre-tournament hot tips Holland. Following the unexpected defeat to a very organised Danish Team they suffered a huge setback at the hands of another solid Germany victory. Leaving the Dutch national team languishing at the foot of the table with no points from 2 games is a very unusual position to be in indeed. Portugal showed their intent with a victory over Denmark leaving Holland needing to beat Portugal by 2 clear goals in the last group game and hope Germany secure a win against the Danes.
England fought back from a pretty perilous position to get the monkey off their back that is Sweden. Recording their first ever win against Sweden in a competitive match, England made lives difficult for themselves with some pretty lacklustre defending that gifted Sweden 2 goals to revert a 1 goal deficit to a 2-1 lead. Some inspiration from the bench in the shape of Theo Walcott saw England turn around what looked like a tournament exiting performance into a shared group topping position. Just a draw is needed by France and England in the final games will see them through.
The Republic of Ireland rather shot themselves in the foot again by conceding a goal within 3 minutes in consecutive games and chased Spanish shadows for the remaining 87 minutes, conceding a hat full of goals in the meantime and rarely troubling at the other end. Bad timing, or just bad luck, but as results stood, Ireland became the first team packing their bags for the flight home. Followed by Sweden at the hands of England. A draw between Italy and Croatia leaves group C up for grabs with 3 teams fighting for the 2 quarter final places.
As for the hosts, Poland are in real danger of being eliminated as the played out a 1-1 draw with Russia who looked decidedly off colour and Greece also living life dangerously falling 2-1 to the Czech republic.
- This post was a little late going out, so the big news is;
Russia and Poland are packing their bags as group A sends a surprise package Greece and the Czech Republic t to the quarter finals.
Dutch misery continues with a pointless campaign and they go home at bottom of group with Denmark joining them following a desperate attempt to overcome a very solid and 3 from 3 Germany!
