Top Ten Summer Destinations

The summer holidays are usually the most cherished part of the calendar, a chance to get a prolonged break away on your own, with friends or family. While many people in Europe choose low cost Continental flights to head to the beach and catch up on missed sunshine, you can also have fantastic cultural experiences by looking for deals on long haul routes. With that in mind here’s our list on the 10 best summer holiday destinations.

1. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is the number one summer travel destination because it combines fascinating culture with miles of beaches along the Mediterranean coast. Visitors can choose to admire the magnificent buildings of Gaudi, see a match at the imposing Camp Nou football stadium or stroll through the Ramblas towards the seaside. Barcelona has a wealth of cheap flight connections and accommodation and if you head there in the middle of June you can catch the massive Sonar electronic music festival.

2. Nice, France
This stunning port city is located on the French Riviera and has been one of the most coveted summer holiday destinations in Europe for years. There are cheap flights to Nice Airport from where you can rent bicycles or cars at low prices. Once you are there though things get a bit pricier. Travellers on a budget can still enjoy spectacular views by exploring the city on foot, particularly if they have to stamina to climb the Colline du Chateau which affords amazing panoramas of Nice harbour.

3. Toronto, Canada
Although a major city doesn’t sound like a typical summer holiday destination, Toronto not only has acres of parks but it also has hundreds of beaches alongside Lake Ontario. Canada often experiences wonderful summer weather and with the Toronto population usually recovering from a long cold winter, you can ensure that there will be a lively atmosphere. A nice way to spend a summer’s day is to take a boat out to the various Toronto islands.URcGFkZGluZy10b3A6IDJweDsWAgIBDw$form$TextThreeImage$gridAttachments$hidSelection=

4. San Francisco, California
This city is simply jaw-dropping wherever you look and in the summer San Francisco bay is packed with tourists who want to take the boat to Alcatraz. This notorious prison, known as The Rock, once housed Al Capone, and so makes a fun day out for the family. You can also get astounding views of the Golden Gate Bridge or marvel at the huge sea lions which sun themselves around the harbour. Alternatively hop on a cable car and see the old hippy area of Haight Ashbury which was the place to be during the ‘Summer of Love’.

5. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is an enchanting city for a weekend break and the Portuguese capital is also the ideal place for blossoming romance. Lisbon makes a great summer holiday destination because it gets hot at that time of year and yet you are always near to the cooling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Immerse yourself in Portuguese culture, especially at the Bairro Alto hilltop neighbour hood where numerous bars are open all night.

6. Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town has all the ingredients for an unforgettable summer holiday. This South African capital has miles of fantastic beaches where you can enjoy water sports such as surfing, and numerous other attractions as well. Australians really know how to enjoy good weather with poolside barbecues and trips to the beach and there are many fantastic places to visit which are only a short drive from the centre. Take a boat out to Darling Harbour and if you are lucky you may even be able to see whales on their migratory journey.

8. Oslo, Norway
The intriguing city of Oslo is often the first port of call for visitors who are heading north west to the Norwegian Fjords.
