There’s no better way to remove yourself from the humdrum of ordinary life than by escaping up to a mountain resort where you can leave your troubles far down below. For thousands of years man has gravitated towards mountains in search of peace and tranquility and with the increasing ease of flying many more exotic mountain resorts are now accessible. Here’s a list of our top ten, spanning the globe.

Definitely our number one mountain resort because nowhere else can boast such ancient historical significance. After all this was the birthplace of the God Dionysus, so you are guaranteed to have a good time, while worshippers came here to pay homage to Orpheus in ancient times. Even Alexander the Great stopped here in a quest for gold to fund all his conquests. There are a number of beautiful boutique hotels here and stunning walks through the mountain countryside to be had.  

2. Ambuja Farms Resort, Nepal
The Himalayas are the most impressive mountains in the world and amazing mountain resorts reward travellers who make it up to this cloud covered land. Most of them are seeking clear space for thinking in an uncluttered environment and the Ambuja Farms Resort fulfils this need. Staying here is the essence of peace and quiet with nothing to disturb during relaxing walks in the Bandipur forest except gentle birdsong. Despite being reasonably priced the place is very well managed.

3. Drowsy Water Dude Ranch, Colorado
The Rocky Mountains are full of incredible resorts but if you want something fun for all the family then the Drowsy Water Dude Ranch is hard to beat. Voted the best all inclusive resort in the world by Tripadvisor in 2010, this huge family ranch spans more than 600 acres. Horse riding is the main activity on the menu but you can also enjoy golf, rodeos and rafting trips as well as comfortable accommodation and hearty food.

4. Koh Lipe Mountain Resort Thailand
This mountain resort is absolutely idyllic because it overlooks the sea and the island of Adang. Even the trip there is exciting as the Koh Lipe Island can only be accessed by speedboat or ferry. The resort is perfect for hikers who want to explore the amazing jungle scenery of Thailand as well as snorkelers and scuba divers who are close to the National Marine Park in Tarutao. There are highly recommended spa facilities which are a great way to banish the aches and pains from a day’s skiing while diners get a choice of buffet meals and a la carte. Staff are friendly and helpful and if you can drag yourself away from the hotel there are 75 kms of ski runs to explore.
