White winter good for car hire
White winter good for car hire
2/17/2009
Dream conditions for skiing this winter have led to an increase in car hire.
Weather over the Alps right now, where the world ski championships are being held in Val d’Isere, is absolutely perfect with tonnes of fresh powder making it a delight for skiers and snow boarders.
This occurrence has led to car rentals being boosted by a third in some European countries. Geneva in Switzerland has seen the biggest boost in car rental with a 33% increase, while car hire is up 10% in Munich, Germany, and 20% in Salzburg, Austria. Car rental is also enjoying a fillip in North America due to the heavy winter conditions.
One company which is enjoying the booming trade is carrentals.co.uk whose managing director has said that over all car hire is up 25% compared to this time last year.
Carrentals.co.uk managing director Gareth Robinson said: "The heavy snowfall this year has meant ski resorts in the Alps and North America are experiencing fantastic conditions, and this is attracting many British skiers to make more frequent visits.”What we are seeing is many people opting for independently booked breaks, with car hire forming an integral part of these."
He added: "Despite the increase in demand there is still availability in many resorts. The key is to book as far in advance as you can to make sure you get the right car for your requirements and any extras you may need."

Another business which is thriving during the recession is car clubs. More and more people are signing up to share cars and cut their costs. Car club members do not have to pay road tax, MOTs or insurance, an annual pay out which costs motorists more than £2,000 every year.
Among the companies to do well last year are Streetcar which has doubled its membership up to 50,000 people and City Car Club which has increased its members by almost 100%. The latter company has been going for six years and has about 350 cars available for use across the United Kingdom.
James Finlayson, chief executive of City Car Club, said: "When we first started, the concept of car clubs was unusual and the main reasons for people joining were environmental.
“Now, people are joining predominantly to help ease their financial situation and remove the hassle of owning a car."
