A hire car met an untimely end after a vacationing couple ‘flew’ it into a building. | Car Rental News
3/9/2009
The incident happened in the Marbella hills of Southern Spain when the male driver, who is in his sixties, accidentally accelerated around a corner instead of braking.
.
The rented Ford Focus they were driving was then literally launched off a hill and embedded into an apartment block.
A witness at the scene said: “The couple fell from such a height that at first I thought a part of a plane had fallen out of the sky.”
Amazingly the couple emerged unscathed from the car and did not need the help of the police and paramedics who had turned up to help.
The onlooker added: “The fact the couple inside walked away without serious injury defies logical explanation.”
The only casualty was the apartment veranda of a German couple which was totally written off in the crash, as was the hire car.
In other news a sheriff has expressed her shock after a serial car thief was released early from jail.
Mohamed Hamayun, 23, had been released only nine weeks into an eight month jail sentence for auto theft when he struck again, stealing a £35,000 BMW from a car hire company in Edinburgh.
Speaking at his court case Sheriff Fiona Reith, QC said: "Nine weeks, I don't understand that.
“I'm really rather taken aback, I had no idea that was actually happening."
In October 2007 Mr Hamayun hired the BMW from Go Geta Car Rental with a stolen credit card. The vehicle was never returned and the £1,800 rental fees were never paid.
Hamayun, of Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, pleaded guilty at Edinburgh Sheriff Court to fraudulently obtaining goods and services worth £36,857.84.
Sheriff Reith deferred sentence for background reports and allowed him to remain on bail until he returns to court next month.
