Avoid Large Car Hire Excess Fees
Avoid Large Car Hire Excess Fees
5/16/2009
Drivers should avoid paying large excess fees for their car hire in the view of an expert.
The excess is what you are liable to pay if you have an accident. It is therefore worth noting when booking car hire what the excess is and whether you get a vehicle theft waiver and a collision damage waiver.
Writing in the Daily Mail, Gill Charlton advised motorists who hope to rent a vehicle abroad to approach a third party operator with a view to buying European excess cover.
Gill Charlton wrote in her article: “Importantly, this insurance provides cover of up to £2,000 for damage to windows, tyres and the vehicle underside – something often excluded in top-up insurance sold by rental companies.”
This cheap, month long cover costs less than £50 if you are younger than 75 years of age. This could be less than the car hire firm (such as Avis, Enterprise and Hertz) would charge you for buying direct from them.
Another expert, finance sage Martin Lewis, recently said on the GMTV ITV morning breakfast show that there were some great car hire deals around.
He said: "A taxi from
Malaga airport
to
Marbella
is about 50 to 60 quid each way because of the exchange rate, so that’s 100 quid for a return taxi.
"However, car hire potentially costs less than 10 pounds per day, so you can get the bargain of a week’s car hire Malaga for only 70 quid."
This is timely advice at a time of year when there is expected to be a boom in car hire sales.
Managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, Gareth Robinson, said: 'We've definitely seen a change in booking - customers seem to want to escape the UK and the constant reminders of recession.
'As a result, they are booking longer escapes to favourite destinations such as Switzerland, the
Algarve
and Florida, and also newer locations like the Atlantic coast in Portugal.'
