Two major car hire companies are making further cuts among their American staff.

Alamo Rent a Car and National Car Rental are to make 171 redundancies in the New York area of West 77th Street at the beginning of August.

Both subsidiaries of Enterprise rent a car, a St Louis company, Alamo Rent a Car and National Car Rental are laying off more than a third of their workers in Manhattan.

According to the notice given to the New York State Department of Labor, the financial pinch caused by the credit crunch is to blame for the lay offs which are in the division of the shuttle services at Newark airport. Newark airport is one of the largest airports in the United States of America.
Enterprise Family vice president Jason Altman stated in a memo sent out to staff members recently: “We have considered the possibility of this arrangement for several years.

“In these tough economic times we believe we must take this action now to take advantage of all operational efficiencies possible.”
From August 1, 2009, Alamo and National will outsource their shuttle services using Select Staffing and Cavalry Staffing.

Nevertheless, workers from Alamo rent a car and National car rental (the companies were acquired by Enterprise in 2007) who have been made redundant are to be encouraged to go for interviews with Cavalry staffing and Select Staffing.

Just under 300 employees are expected to stay on the books in New York.
Enterprise has been around for more than 50 years but for the first time last autumn it was forced to cut a thousand jobs due to the global financial crisis. The popularity of car share schemes in America is also thought to be to blame for the decline in the United States rental car industry.
