Romford Mini Guide

Romford is in Essex, Right?
Romford is a large town in north east London and situated on the river Rom. Its name comes from the old English ‘rum’ and ‘ford’ meaning ‘wide ford’. It used to be considered part of the county of Essex but is now part of greater London.

How do I get Around?
London Buses have buses into the city and the surrounds. There are night buses to Stratford and Paddington Railway Station too. The town has a railway station and is on the Great Eastern Mainline to Liverpool Street Station. London Stansted is the nearest airport to Romford.

Where can I Stay in Town?
The Travelodge Romford Central is close to all the bars and restaurants. It has modern rooms and basic facilities, but fine if you are just there to shop and party. Wi-Fi access is also available.

Is There Anywhere Good to eat?
Visit the Brothers Fish Bar for the best fish and chips in town of if you like some spice, go to One Love Caribbean Restaurant who specialise in West Indian dishes. Try their saltfish and ackee or fish escovitch style. For pub food, head to the Golden Lion pub, the oldest inn in England and sample the real ale and carvery selection.

It’s all About the Nightlife
The town is well known for its nightlife. The two most famous clubs are the Bhudda Lounge and Liquid and Envy – there you can dance all night long. If nightclubs are not your thing you can visit the City Pavillion, eat and drink there and go ten pin bowling.

There Must be Shopping…
Of course! Browse for bargains at the famous Romford Market, held 3 days a week. The town has 3 malls, the 2 newest being The Mall and The Brewery. Liberty Shopping Centre has been completely renovated and is probably the most popular mall.

What Else can I do?
You can see the latest movies at VUE, a multiplex cinema or go ice skating at Romford Ice Arena. If you are feeling lucky, take a bet at Romford Greyhound Stadium, one of the few dog racing tracks left in the London area.

Romford has a regular market which traces its roots back to the 13th century. Today though, the town is more often used as a commuter area for central London. It is almost unique in the UK in having an equal amount of its GDP generated by businesses during the night and day.

This is because of the many bars, restaurants and clubs which led to its popularity as an entertainment venue. Hiring a car there, begin your evening with a meal, before enjoying a film at one of the many cinemas, then on to a bar and finally a nightclub.
