Leicester Mini Guide

Leicester is the capital of the county of Leicestershire and one of the largest cities in the Midlands. Once you have arrived at East Midlands Airport it will only take you half an hour to get to Leicester having picked up your Rhinohire car.  Alternatively you could meet with Rhino representatives at Birmingham International Airport as this is only an hours drive away. Frequent train services go to Leicester from the London airports Stansted, Luton and Gatwick Airport as well as Manchester Airport via Sheffield.

The city, which has around a third of a million inhabitants, is conveniently situated near to the M1 motorway, meaning that it can be accessed easily whether you are coming from the north or the south.

Like many English cities the centre can get congested and is easy to get lost in due to having a number of one way systems. You may well want to consider using the park and ride system for Leicester. The park and ride service is at Braunstone Cross Roads, just off the A47. This service is well signposted on the A47, and the M1 which you would leave at junction 21A. Once you have reached the city centre you can walk comfortably to where you need to go. This may include the large shopping centre which is called The Shires and has a wide range of shops and stores to browse.

If you prefer smaller shops and boutique fare then head to the lanes area near Loseby Lane where there are a number of jewellery purveyors and delicatessens.

Having been founded in 50 CE, Leicester is one of the oldest cities in Britain but can now claim to be one of the most cosmopolitan as it is home to so many different cultures. One remainder of its Roman heritage are the baths which can be seen at the Jewry Wall Museum in Leicester city centre. Another popular attraction which is fun for all the family in Leicester is the National Space Museum. It is the only one of its kind in the whole of England.

You will need a car to get out of the city and one relaxing place to go for a walk is the 850 acre Bradgate Park which also encompasses a visitor’s museum. This is where Lady Jane Grey lived, though she was only queen of England for nine days.
