This history began in the 12th century when a charter was granted by the Bishop of London to Chelmsford that allowed a market to be held there. Though under cover and not in the open air, the market still carries on to this day from Tuesdays through to Saturdays.

But before it was a market town Chelmsford was settled during the Bronze Age and Roman times, while there is a later mention of Chelmsford in the Doomsday book. By the 14th century Chelmsford had become a focal point for the Peasant’s Revolt of 1381. This was brutally quelled by King Richard II with many of the rebels put to death in the area where Primrose Hill now stands.

Over the years Chelmsford made the transition from having the market as the centre of its economy to being an industrial town.
