Bolton Mini Guide

I Don’t Know Much About Bolton, can you Help?
Bolton was an important Saxon town but declined over the centuries until it was found that it had the perfect conditions and resources to become a prosperous mill town. In the early days of the industrial revolution the town grew from strength to strength and the city’s council was graced with the opportunity to spend some of the taxes on magnificent Victorian buildings as well as funding recreational activities for the mill workers. With the advent of cheap textiles from the Far East the city declined again but is now striving to revive once more with service industries.

How Easy is it to get to?
It’s very easy to get to Bolton. You can fly into Manchester Airport on a variety of carriers including some of the low cost airlines. From the airport, trains, buses or taxis will get you quickly to Bolton. Alternatively, there are many good train connections to Bolton together with a National Express coach route which will be cheaper than air fares.

What Should I do Whilst There?
If you’re a football fan, visit the Reebok Stadium where Bolton Wanderers play their home matches. As well as enjoying seeing Premiership teams play you’ll be visiting one of Britain’s most historic clubs. You should also take the opportunity to visit Smithills, the third church to be built on the ancient Anglo Saxon site. The Ye Olde Man and Scythe is a well-known town pub which annually commemorates the beheading of the 7th Earl of Derby during the Civil War. With its heritage of cloth manufacture, it's no surprise to learn that there are many shops where you can buy cloth by the metre and even find tailors and dressmakers in the city to make suits or dresses for you.

And in the Evenings?
There’s nothing better than a pint and possibly one of the town’s renowned pasties from Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe. The town has its own brewery and many of the ales are sold in local pubs to accompany the pie.

Bolton is a magnificent town built with the proceeds of the cotton trade. Many of the town’s fine public buildings were funded by entrepreneurs of the Victorian era leaving a lasting legacy to the town today.

Hire a car to visit Hall i’ th’ Wood, a beautiful medieval building, originally built as a yeoman’s house and restored by the Lever foundation and presented to the town in 1900. Today it houses a fabulous museum detailing the town’s history and growth, hand in hand with the textile industry. Other equally impressive buildings of note include the town hall.
