For groups of four or five, taxis can be a more cost-effective option than the shuttles. Orlando International to I-Drive would cost around $35 plus tip - making it about $8 each for five - $12 from I-Drive to Universal Orlando and $25 from I-Drive to Downtown Disney. You will find plenty of taxis waiting in ranks at the parks, hotels and shopping centres, but they don't cruise around looking for fares, so it is usually best to book one in advance. You also need to ensure you choose a reliable, fully insured company (Orlando has what are known as 'gypsy' cab drivers, who appear to be with reputable firms but often do not have full passenger insurance). Check that the name and phone number of the cab company is clearly displayed on the side, that the driver's ID and insurance are visible and their rates are shown on the window or inside the car. 'Gypsy' drivers look for fares in the airport baggage hall, which is strictly illegal - all legitimate taxis should be in the rank on Level 1.
LOCAL INFORMATION:
The Mears group (407 699 9999) has three firms who work (via computer system) through them -Checker Cabs, Yellow Cabs and City Cabs - all of which are reliable. Most taxis are metered but it is also acceptable to ask what the fare is in advance. Other reputable firms include Central Florida Taxis (407 851 7523 or freephone 1-800 441 3276 in Florida), Star Taxis (407 857 9999), Diamond Cab Co (407 523 3333) and Town & Country (407 828 3035; they tend not to run meters but will happily do so if you ask, or just ask the fare in advance). Several hotels have town cars at their ranks, and these will not have meters, so you can either ask the fare or call one of the companies listed above yourself.
