The scale of the car-hire operation is huge, with as many as 400 visitors arriving at a time. Most British holiday companies offer 'free car hire', but that does not mean it won't cost you anything. Having a credit card is essential, and there are two main kinds of insurance, the most important being the Loss or Collision Damage Waiver (LDW or CDW). This costs around $20 a day and covers you for any damage to your hire car. You can manage without it, but the hire company will insist on a huge deposit in the order of $1,500 on your credit card (and you are also liable for ANY damage).
You will also be offered Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) or Extended Protection at around $13 a day. This covers you against being sued by any court-
happy American you may happen to bump into (not essential, but good for your peace of mind).
