Orlando Car Rental

LOCAL INFORMATION:

ORLANDO WITHOUT A CAR.

Although being mobile is advisable, it is possible to survive without a car. However, few of the attractions are within walking distance of hotels and taxis can be expensive. You also need to plan your campaign with greater precision to allow for extra travelling time (and, with children, taking buses can be tiring). If you decide not to drive, your best base is either Walt Disney World Resort in Florida (free transport throughout, but harder to get to the rest of Orlando) or International Drive (I-Drive) for its location, good pavements and the great I-Ride Trolley. Many hotels nave free shuttles to some of the parks or a cheap regular mini-bus service.
There are basically three different transport routes: public transport, shuttle services and taxis.

Public transport
The reliable, cheap, but slightly plodding Lynx bus system (407 841 8240, www.golynx.com) covers much of metro Orlando. Ask for a copy of their excellent System Map, which shows all their routes (or 'Links') and the main attractions. Worth noting are Link 42 from Orlando International Airport to I-Drive; Links 56 and 304, respectively from Kissimmee and the I-Drive area to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida; Link 18 from Kissimmee to downtown Orlando; Link 55, which covers a large part of Highway 192 in Kissimmee from Osceola Square Mall all the way west to Secret Lake Drive; Link 38, I-Drive to downtown Orlando; and Links 50 and 300, which both operate from Disney to downtown Orlando.

CHEAP CAR RENTAL ORLANDO

Lynx fares are $1.25 a ride (transfers are free) or $10 for a weekly pass (children 6 and under go free with a full-fare passenger). The service is every 30 minutes in the main areas, every 15 minutes from 6-9am and 3.30-6.30pm, but remember to have the right change. Lynx bus stops are marked by pink paw-print signs and all buses are wheelchair accessible. There can be long queues for the Lynx buses out of Disney at closing time, and it may be more worthwhile getting Disney transport to Downtown Disney, spending some time there, then getting a cab back to your hotel (about $25 to I-Drive).

The I-Drive area also has the great-value I-Ride trolley, which operates 2 routes along a 15 mile stretch of this tourist corridor. The Main Line runs from the Universal Orlando resort area of Windhover Drive and Major Boulevard in the north, via Belz shopping centre at the top of I-Drive, to SeaWorld via Westwood Boulevard and Sea Harbor Drive, and on to Orlando Premium Outlets in the south. The Green Line basically covers Universal Boulevard, from the Orange County Convention Center up to the junction of I-Drive and Kirkman Road (407 354 5656, www.iridetrolley.com). Running every day, 7am-10.30pm at roughly 15-minute intervals (30 minutes on the Green Line), it costs 75c per trip (25c for seniors) - please have the right change - or you can buy Unlimited Ride passes for 1, 3, 5, 7 or 14 days at $2, $3, $5, $7 or $14. You can buy a 14-day pass at the official Visitor Center on I-Drive (see page 47) by Austrian Court and save $2.

Universal Studios Orlando

If you need to transfer between routes, ask for a transfer coupon when you board (transfers are free with Unlimited Ride passes). Kids 12 and under go free with an adult, and all trolleys have hydraulic lifts for wheelchairs. Passes are sold at 75 locations in the I-Drive area, including most hotel service desks. One other regular service worth noting is from SeaWorld to Busch Gardens in Tampa, with six departure points daily from 8.15-9.3Oam. Called the Busch Shuttle Express, it costs $5 a person but is free if you have bought Busch tickets in advance (included in the 5-Park Orlando FlexTicket).
