Trabzon is a city on the Black Sea coast in the north east of Turkey. It is located on the famous Silk Road, making it a melting pot of cultures and a large trade gateway. Nowadays, it is well known for its major exports of tea, hazelnuts and anchovies.
How do I get There?
You can fly into Trabzon Airport from major cities in Turkey such as Ankara and Istanbul. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you can take a bus from Istanbul - the journey time is 18 hours! Long distance buses are available from most cities in Turkey. Within the city you can use taxis or dolmus to get around.
What can I see in the City?
Visit the Byzantine Aya Sofia Church and Museum, see the stunning frescoes and learn more about the city’s history. Ataturk Pavillion is an interesting building with period rooms and is a shrine to the first president of the republic of Turkey. Once you have seen the most historic sites in town, head for the square at Meydan. There you can take a break at the tea garden or browse the shops.
What Souvenirs Should I buy?
For an interesting shopping experience, explore the ancient narrow streets of the bazaar, near to Meydan. The silver and gold bracelets made there are a perfect gift and take home a piece of copperware for yourself. If you prefer to shop outside the bazaar there is the Trabzon Cevahir Outlet, you may be able to find a few bargains there.
Will I Like the Food?
They like their fish there but lamb kofta are also popular. For a local snack try the karadeniz pidesi – a pitta bread filled with minced beef and eggs or cheese. If you would like to try something a little more unusual try Taflan Kavumasi, a cherry dish with bay and onions.

Where can I go Outside of the City?
Take a drive through the Pontiac Mountains and enjoy the spectacular views at Lake Uzungol, 99 km away from the city. A must see is the Sumela Monastery perched on a mountain hillside, 30km south of Trabzon.
