Alanya is the most important tourist destination in Turkey and it’s easy to see why. Beautiful beaches and fabulous scenery combine with rich history to make it the perfect destination.
Hire a car in the city and explore the peninsula on which the citadel that crowns the city begins. Walk to the end to see the spot where criminals and traitors were hurled to their deaths. Near there is the Red Tower, a big feature of the citadel. Exploring further afield you’ll come to Cleopatra’s Beach, a stretch of sand as beautiful as the queen herself.
Alanya Mini Guide
Part of the Antalya province of Turkey which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, Alanya is a very popular tourist resort. Situated on the south coast there are loads of spectacular sights for visitors to see such as the Red Tower of Alanya castle.
A hire car is useful as the nearest airport is at Antalya, more than two hours away. You can then use your vehicle to see all the sights of the town as well as the surrounding hillsides. This includes the old citadel and the interesting architecture of the ship yard. You can see an ancient amphitheatre or try one of the many other forms of transport which include donkey rides, quad bikes and jeep safaris.
There is also plenty of shopping to do in the town but beware much of it is fake goods. Don't let the high end brand names entice you, unless you are quite happy to have a fake watch etc. Haggling for your prices is part of the fun there, but this only operates for luxuries and not for groceries.
If you are willing to rent a boat for the day you can also do numerous trips out to see the caves which dot the coastline. Scuba diving is also good there and a popular choice for tourists.
