There’s plenty to keep the visitor occupied in Vaxjo with some unusual sights into the bargain. One of the strangest must be the Echo Fountain where the sounds made by the water tower echo several times around it. You also have the ancient looking Teleborg Castle but it was only built just over a hundred years ago.
Many people also come here for the natural beauty and there are several beautiful walks around the lake found just south of the town centre. It’s also possible to hire boats or just sit at a café and watch life on the lake.

You can fly direct to Smaland Airport from a number of destinations but for travellers from the UK you need to make a connection at Stockholm or Copenhagen. You can then fly into Smaland Airport or take the sometimes quicker train. Once you’re there it’s really quick into Vaxjo city centre.
What will I See when I Get into Vaxjo?
There’s the impressive 12th century cathedral which contains many fine examples of Swedish glass, manufactured locally over the centuries and donated to the church. It makes an interesting attraction as you see how glass products have changed in design and quality over the centuries. You can follow this up with a visit to the Smaland Museum which is dedicated to the history of glass manufacture in the region. There is an informative display on the processes and techniques used and a workshop where craftsmen still blow the glass.
From there take a walk around Teleborg Castle, built at the start of the 20th century but in an old style. It was built as a lavish home but is now open to the public. Finally, visit the curious Echo Fountain. It’s more of a musical instrument in some ways as the water, cascading through the tower makes noises which echo in its chambers.
What can I Expect when I Arrive at the Airport?
The airport is small but modern and has good, if limited facilities. It’s quite quick to get through baggage reclaim and customs and if you need any help, there’s a public information desk in the main hall. Car hire is available but we’d recommend that you book it before travel to ensure you get the car you want. The operators’ desks are easily found in the arrivals concourse. The other options to get you into Vaxjo are the local bus - the timetables and fares are available online but also at the airport information desk, or by taxi which will cost around 250 SEK for a one way journey.
And When I fly Home?
The airport has enough to occupy you whilst waiting for your flight. There is a smart café/bar serving delicious meals and drinks together with an outlet called ‘Grab ’n Fly’ where you can pick up packaged snacks as well as giftware including local glassware and a duty free shop selling a good range of items including alcohol, especially the local vodka, perfumery, tobacco products and gifts. There’s also a small kiosk which sells magazines and newspapers including some international ones. Here too you can buy snacks, drinks and sweets.
