Most arrivals there use Vasteras as a cheap alternative to the major, but closer, Stockholm airports. In getting a hire car or the shuttle for the capital they are missing the attractions of nearby Vasteras.
One of Sweden’s oldest cities, it retains some of the medieval charm in the narrow streets and old buildings of Stora Torget where you’ll also come across the Cathedral, parts of which date from the early 13th century. If you’ve hired a car then the Viking burial mounds at Anundshog outside the city make a great picnic area.

Why do Ryanair fly to Vasteras?
Like many budget airlines, Ryanair use Vasteras because landing charges are cheaper that the airports closer to Stockholm and the savings can be passed onto the customer. It means a ninety minute journey into the city though. Vasteras itself is worth a look, even if you only spend a day or two there during your trip. It’s a big city with a long history and a lot to see and do including museums, art galleries and ancient buildings, an old quarter plus some great places for a walk.
Which UK Airports can I use?
You can use London Stansted as your start point. All the other Ryanair routes there are to and from Spain.
What’s the Airport Like?
It’s very small with the departure lounge a little like a waiting room. The airport prides itself on its friendly and efficient service and promise very short waits for check in, baggage collection and security.
What Should I Expect on Arrival?
There’s not much chance you’ll get lost or be unable to find anything there and the small number of flights mean that baggage rarely goes missing. If you do need help though, there’s an information desk in the departure area where the staff can help you with transportation, accommodation or general airport questions. Once you’ve collected your baggage and passed through passport control you need to decide how to get to your destination.
If staying in Vasteras, the city is only minutes away by bus or taxi. If you’re travelling to Stockholm then you have the choice of the long distance shuttle or to hire a car. Pre-booking is recommended and the desks are easily located on your right as you head to the exit.
And When I Return Home?
The airport has surprisingly good facilities. There’s the Sky Bistro for snacks, drinks and hot meals as well as a pub serving alcoholic drinks and a Euroshop duty free outlet with the usual range of goods. There are also IT points dotted around the airport with Wi-Fi access.
