Stockholm Mini-Guide
Set across numerous different islands, Sweden’s capital Stockholm is one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
Stockholm has all the best aspects of Sweden – waterways, woods, and plenty of fresh air while still being a cosmopolitan city.
It is a city of many beautiful buildings and museums and there is plenty for the visitor to see and do.
Don’t miss the enchanting Old Town, known as Gamla Stan, with the medieval church Riddarholmskyrkan being among the many well preserved buildings.
Gamla Stan is located in the southern part of the inner city of Stockholm. Here you can also explore the islands of Lilla Essingen, Kungsholmen and Stora Essingen.
A place to find the trendy heart of Stockholm which has bars, clubs and restaurants is the Ostermalm. As the area also contains many of Stockholm’s museums this is a very good place for the tourist to get a feel for Sweden while strolling down picturesque tree-lined avenues.
If you want to do some shopping head to centre of Stockholm close to the train station. This district is known as Norrmalm which is the retail and commercial centre within the northern part of the inner city. It is the place to experience a day out and about as a Swede would and the busy Drottninggatan street is the focal point for many locals.
Arriving to Stockholm you will most likely fly into Arlanda airport though this is located at least a half hour’s drive outside of the city.
Other terminals are Bromma which is smaller but situated only 15 minutes drive to the west of Stockholm, while your cheapest option is to fly to Skavsta airport as both Ryanair and Wizzair have routes here. At Skavsta you will definitely want to take advantage of our low cost car rental as it is 100 kilometres away from Stockholm city. The same applies for Vasteras airport which also has Ryanair routes. Remember that Stockholm operates a congestion charge for driving in the city centre and budget accordingly, or park outside of the city and use the public transport system.
One trip which must be taken when in Stockholm is by boat to see the vast archipelago of more than 24,000 islands. The best time to make this trip is in the summer when temperatures are usually between 20-25 degrees Celsius.
Although the weather in Stockholm is pretty mild considering how far north it is, you should be aware that during the winter months there is very little day light.
