Lund is jointly Sweden’s oldest city, founded in 990 AD. It is believed to have been founded by one of two famous Scandinavians; Sweyn Forkbeard or Canute the Great. For many years it was governed by Denmark until the successful conclusion of its struggles to re-join Sweden. Today it is important for its university which is a major research centre and for the influence of the cathedral on the city’s place as a centre for the promotion of Christianity, a task it has undertaken for nearly a thousand years.
What’s the Best way of Getting There?
You can either fly into either Malmo or Copenhagen airports. From Malmo, a bus route will take you into the heart of Lund whilst from Copenhagen you can take a train or bus across the dizzyingly beautiful Oresund Bridge that connects Sweden with Denmark.
What Should I be Doing When I’m in Lund?
Most visitors begin with a trip to Lund Cathedral. It’s the second biggest cathedral in Scandinavia and is visible from across the city. Nearly a thousand years old, it is very interesting and imposing, architecturally and if you are visiting on a Saturday there’s a free organ concert in the morning. Just inside the door of the cathedral you’ll find a very ornate astronomical clock which puts on a fascinating show on the hour each afternoon.
Nearby is the Ingvar Kamprad Design Centrum, a great place to visit if you’re fond of Scandinavian design and funded by the founder of IKEA. Here, you’ll see the latest innovations in shape and the materials that everyday items are made from and it’s a great place for the curious.
What’s the Entertainment Like There?
Entertainment choices are quite impressive with much centred around the large student population. There are many bars and clubs some themed around the nationality of clientele they wish to attract.
