Malaga is the biggest coastal city in the south with more than half a million inhabitants and mile upon mile of coastline stretching alongside the Mediterranean Sea. The nearest beach to the centre is the Malagueta which is a convenient option for a quick sunbathe, but if you are hoping to explore there are many other beaches within a short walking distance. Cooling sea breezes mean that Malaga can withstand the powerful heat of Spain's summers and the weather is probably the main draw for visitors along with beaches, bars and a whole host of attractions.
The average annual temperatures in Malaga are a mild 19 degrees Celsius and there are usually at least 300 days of sunshine every year. Many historical monuments in Malaga have also managed to withstand the destruction caused during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. There is a huge baroque cathedral known as La Manquita, or one armed woman because it is minus a bell tower, while a Moorish castle which overlooks the city from high up on a hill is now a state run hotel where you can enjoy long lunches and soak in the views. A Moorish fortress called the Alcazaba has now been turned into a museum which is certainly worth setting aside an afternoon to see.
Malaga is one of the largest cities in Andalucia and has a population of over a million people when its satellite towns are taken into account. It has had a long history and played host to many different races including the Phoenicians and the Moors before the Spanish took over.
A good time to visit Malaga, if you don't mind the crowds, is during the holy week festivities in August when there is a true breadth of Spanish cultural events on offer such as flamenco dancing and wine and tapas tasting throughout the streets. The events have been celebrated for more than 500 years and are very different from holy week celebrations in other parts of Spain.
Processional thrones are carried through the streets past the devoted citizens who are known as Malaguenos and hold up candles to light the way.
It is known as the week of passion and so there is as much indulgence of the senses as possible with incense and flowers being scattered around and lots of noise and cheering being made.
Car Hire Tips
Car Hire Check in desks will need to see your driving licence, i.e. the plastic card and the counterpart if you hold the new style UK driving licence. Be organised and get your directions in advance as unfamiliar places in an unfamiliar hire car can be daunting at first.
Check out in advance which side of the road you will be driving if in a different Spain, most of Europe drive on the right as does the USA, but Cyprus, UK, Malta drive on the left as do Australia.
Have change ready in the Spain currency for any toll roads you may encounter.
If travelling to a hot country or during midsummer choose a hire car with air conditioning. Turn on the fan with the A/C button otherwise it won’t work! If travelling to ski resorts etc. check out the winter tyre and snow chain options available.
Automatic
Car Hire Malaga, vehicles are available with automatic controls. Remember you will probably not be able to remove the keys from the ignition if you do not put the car in `Park’ first.
