Kimberley is most famous for its diamond mining trade and is the home of the Big Hole. Originally a hill where the first diamonds were discovered, the Big Hole eventually became the spot from which thousand of kilograms of diamonds were extracted. There are current claims to make the Big Hole a World Heritage Site and it is definitely worth seeing if you happen to be in South Africa. Kimberley is home to the De Beers family who revolutionised the diamond trade. Diamonds were first found there in 1866 and the first diamond was known as the Eureka.
Two more diamonds were discovered, one of which was traded on the markets in London for 25,000 Uk Pounds. More and more miners came to the spot to pull out diamonds during the rush years between 1877 and 1914 when the mine was closed. But during that time the diamond rush had given the city that frontier like quality, drawing prospectors and prostitutes from far and wide as well as a mix of black and white citizens. Situated near to the Orange and Vaal Rivers, Kimberley is a major city in the North Cape part of South Africa. In the 29th century Kimberley was the second biggest town in South Africa.
Car hire Kimberley is the most popular method of transport in these parts and there are many reasonable deals on vehicles here so you can have a cheap trip. Cecil Rhodes, who founded Rhodesia among other claims to fame, also spent a lot of time in Kimberley.
