Messina, Siciliy, Italy is a seaport near the north-east tip of Sicily, facing the toe of Italy, 6km (4miles) away across the Strait of Messina.  It handles most of the traffic crossing the strait, which was the location in Greek mythology of the sea monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis.

The city was founded in the 8th century BC, but is period of greatest prosperity as a trading centre began with the Crusades in the 12th  century and lasted until the 14th. Cholera, earthquakes and war killed many thousands of its citizens over the centuries, and only a handful of ancient buildings have survived the earthquakes common on Sicily.  The oldest is the 12th century church of Annunziata dei Catalani.  The cathedral is a 20th century reconstruction of the origninal Norman building.
