Dumfries Mini Guide
The town of Dumfries is part of the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland.
Dumfries is an attractive and functioning town which in 1997 was declared the best place to live in the United Kingdom.
Despite that accolade, having a car in Dumfries gives you the option of getting to any other area of Scotland with ease as it is surrounded by good roads which rarely get too crowded.
Dumfries has had a bloody history with several inhabitants burned for witchcraft during the 17 century and the town was even the location of Scotland’s last public hanging.
Dumfries was where Robert the Bruce was excommunicated from Scotland after stabbing a rival, but he went on to become the King of Scotland. Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet, also spent his last years in Dumfries. There is a statue erected in remembrance of him outside Greyfriars church which is the central church in Dumfries. If you are interested in finding out more about the poet his house is still standing at 24 Burns Street while he was buried in the nearby mausoleum at St Michael’s churchyard.
If you want to get from Dumfries across the nearby border to England then you head east and join the M74 motorway southbound. If you take this same motorway northbound it will lead you to Edinburgh. Edinburgh is one of the world’s most attractive cities and has a wealth of cultural events to entertain the visitor. Its airport is the largest in Scotland and has a number of flights to domestic and international destinations.
Alternatively you can take the A76 and go to Nith, a beautiful piece of land which has the River Nith running through it.
If you are trying to find Dumfries by using a satellite navigation system then the post code district is DG1 or DG2.
