The capital, Amman is served by Queen Alia airport but there is a lot to be seen in the Kingdom if you have a hire car. You can visit the Jordanian resorts on the Dead Sea and experience the strange properties of the water there.
On the way you can visit Mount Nebo where Moses is thought to have seen the promised land before dying. Here you’ll also get a fabulous view of the Dead Sea, Jericho, and the Jerusalem Hills. Also worth visiting is the town of Madaba which is famous for the 6th century mosaic map of Jerusalem.
Queen Alia Airport Mini Guide
The international airport in Amman is Queen Alia and was the arrival point for over 4 million visitors in 2008. The airport was built in 1983 and was named in memory of the late Queen Alia who died six years earlier. The airport has three terminals two of which are passenger and one is for cargo. Situated 32 kilometres from the city it offers good access to the capital with main roads entering and exiting the buildings. Plans for development of the airport are being studied and hope to redesign to accommodate around 9 million passengers a year.
The airport handles many flights both domestic and international and the airport is the main Hub for national airline Royal Jordanian Airlines. The airport also caters as a main route destination for Gulf Air, Jazeera Airways and Jordan Aviation. There are a variety of facilities including cheap car hire at Queen Alia Airport although this is best booked in advance with Rhino to secure the best deals.
Each terminal offers restaurants and bars, banking services, shopping facilities and VIP, business and first class lounges for the use of passengers. The lounge belonging to Royal Jordanian Airlines is newly built and is accessible to first class and business passengers of the airline. The lounge has some of the best facilities in the Middle East with Playrooms for children, smoking rooms, a Library and even bedrooms for passengers to get some rest. There also medical facilities in the airport to help if you are in need of them.
