Parma was an area originally settled during the Bronze Age and its name comes from the Latin word for shield. Much later in its history Parma was ruled by various Italian noble families over the years and the castles which they made their homes still litter the landscape.
In the modern era Parma came under the control of Milan and was divided according to a feudal system. Parma was where the Italian wars were carried out but once the French were expelled Parma became a Papal state. Today it boasts one of the oldest universities in the world, Parma University. Many well known painters and sculptors have come from Parma also.
