Mestre is considered to be the best entry point to Venice but being on the mainland means that it also has great access to the coastline including the beach resort of Lido di Jesolo, the Italian Alps and the northern Balkan states.
Staying there gives you easy access by rail or hire car to Venice or to other interesting places in the region. If driving across into Venice, you’ll have to park near the outskirts and walk in or take the vaporetto so a train is often the better option there.
