Cassino Mini Guide
Cassino Italy Market town midway between Rome and Naples. It was called Casinum in Roman times. The Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino, founded in the 6th century on a peak overlooking the town, was totally destroyed by the Allies when Axis forces defended it for six months in 1944, during the Second World War. It has since been painstakingly rebuilt - as has the town itself.
Located about eighty miles south of the capital Rome, Cassino, or Monte Cassino, is a beautiful town built atop a hill. Created by the Romans and adorned with monasteries during the times of the Benedictine monks there is much to see and do in Cassino. The monastery at Monte Cassino was initially built on top of a temple of Apollo and there are spectacular views out across the surrounding countryside from this hill. The main abbey here as survived a number of attacks and sackings over the years.
It also survived a major earthquake in the 14th century. In the Second World War the allied forces mistakenly believed that it was a German stronghold and subjected it to severe bombing at the Battle of Monte Cassino. Luckily a number of important documents were transferred to the Vatican so that they were not damaged in the conflict. A visit to the monastery would put you in with some illustrious company as it has been visited by many Popes in the past. Among them in 1071 Pope Alexander the second consecrated the church which had been renovated and redecorated. Having to be rebuilt after the Second World War the abbey was re-consecrated by Pope Paul VI.
With car hire Cassino you can find out more about the history of this beautiful part of Italy and also make the short drive to Rome of you wish to. Each car comes with unlimited mileage so that your car hire period will not cost a lot of money.
