Benevento Mini Guide

Benevento is a town close to Naples and with car hire Benevento you get out and about can explore this spectacular city in the south of Italy. But there is much to see and do if you choose to stay in Benevento. The town is brimming with history and many incredible buildings. Some of the best sights include the 16th century Palazzo di Paolo V, the Gothic church of San Francesco alla Dogana, and the church of San Salvatore which dates from the Middle Ages. You can also see a number of Baroque churches. One of the most well known things to see is the Rocca dei Rettori, otherwise known as the castle of Benevento.

The view from up here is spectacular, especially if you climb the Torrione, or Big Tower. Benevento occupies an ancient site and is also the seat of the Catholic archbishop. It is located at the confluence of two rivers on top of a hill. There is a large Romana influence on Benevento as you can see from the Roman Theatre which was built here. Another important relic of Benevento's past is the Arch of Trajan which is based on the Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum.

Later there was a succession of dukes and princes, after Benevento had become a powerful Lombard duchy. By 1000 CE Benevento had become a Principality and afterwards it was a papal city until the year 1081. Benevento became united within Italy in 1860.
