Bari Italy Adriatic seaport about 240 km (150 miles) east of Naples.  Its industries include oil refining and engineering products.  Bari first grew to importance as the Byzantine capital of southern Italy.

The Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini made Bari his headquarters for imperial ventures in the eastern Mediterranean, putting up many buildings in the grand style.

Shopping in Bari is interesting and here you can purchase puglian specialities along with the designer shops and all the Italian big chain stores.  Bari is a student town and as such offers lots of bars and restaurants ensuring a good evening out, the busiest nights being Thursday through to Saturday. 

It is also a fairly commercial town and as such the hotels tend not to be geared so much towards the tourist but more so aimed at business people and hence can offer quite inflated prices.    The old town of Bari is called Bari Vecchia and has more than 40 churches dating back to Medieval times and is the capital of Puglia and a very properous city along with having the ashes of Father Christmas, also known as Saint Nicholas being in the town.  Bari can be easily reached by car and is on the A14 which connects with the A16 leading to Naples.
