Alba is a pretty town in the north east of Italy which has enough fine architecture and attractions to make it worth a stop. Indeed in olden days Alba was once known as the city of towers. Alba is part of the commune of Piedmont, making its residents Piemontese and they live in wider province of Cuneo. Alba has a long history as it dates back to the Roman era, though there were thought to be Ligurian and Celtic tribes in the area too. It was the Romans though who really left their mark with such ancient sites as Alba Pompeia. There are also fortified remains of the gates which surrounded Alba. In the Second World War Alba was a major part of the Italian resistance, so much so that its citizens were honoured with a Gold Medal for Military Valour.
In terms of sights to see in Alba there is the Gothic church of San Domenico which is very interesting architecturally, the 12th century Romanesque Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Baroque church of Saint John the Baptist which houses a Madonna of the Graces.
