About 26,000 people live in Douglas along the banks of a River of the same name. The main driving force behind the development of the town was a port and harbour which has commercial uses for shipping, business and finance. Shipping and fishing have been a way of life for people in this part of the world for a long time.
As trade grew so did the amount of merchant houses, filling out the town. Trading was particularly busy with Liverpool in the north of England. It was not until the Industrial Revolution that Douglas became mainly known as a place where British people liked to take their summer holidays. Douglas has a long history dating back to Bronze Age and evidence of Viking settlement has also been found there. The town was a religious settlement and various monasteries and abbeys were built there as well as a nunnery.
