Waterford Mini Guide
Waterford is a large city in the south east region of Ireland which is famous for its vibrant culture.
With a hire car there are many attractions to see including Waterford Museum of Treasures which charts one thousand years of the city's history. The Waterford Municipal Art Gallery is also worth seeing as it contains many splendid paintings including pieces from renowned Irish artists such as Louis Le Brocquy.
Alternatively you can also go to the Theatre Royal on the Mall and this old Victorian theatre seats about 600 people. Within Waterford there are three theatre companies; the Spraoi, Waterford Youth Arts and the Red Kettle. Waterford means windy fjord in old Norse and it was originally founded by Vikings.
This city of about 50,000 people is rich in history having experienced sieges by the armies of Cromwell during his conquest of Ireland. It is also known as a major Irish port. Many shipyards are based there and Trans Atlantic liners were built there in the middle of the 19th century.
Glass making was the other main industry with Waterford Crystal, still being very famous throughout the United Kingdom
Because the climate of Waterford is changeable and rainy, car hire is a good way to make sure that you are always covered or near to cover. There is so much to see there that you don't want to let the weather put you off.
Waterford Airport is a small mostly regional airport which also has flights to Lorient in France
