Tata Mini Guide
Located in the north west of Hungary, Tata is a town in Komarom Esztergom county. It is modest in size with only an estimated 24,000 inhabitants. As well as Hungarians there are also some German and Roma people. The area is quite mountainous and so you may want to take advantage of the great deals we have on four wheel drive vehicles to see some attractive countryside. The main roads there are the E60, the M1 and E75 which connect Tata with the capital Budapest, as well as the city of Vienna in Austria.
There are also bus and railway lines. However if you plan to see the Gerecse valley and the Vertes Mountains, which are more than 40 miles away from the capital, then having a rental car is the best option. That way can also find out more about the interesting history of the area. Although some of the oldest settlements were Roman there have been archaeological findings dating all the way back to prehistoric times.
Over the years many castles and fortifications were built in Tata to keep out invaders. Some of the main battles were with the Turkish as they looked to expand the Ottoman Empire. Nevertheless they captured the main castle, which would have been the tourist site most worth seeing, during the 16th century. The Hapsburg family later burnt the castle down to make a political point. Today you can still see a castle next to the Old Lake, the Esterhazy Palace and other sites which include the Heroes Square with its first World War monument.
