Kaposvar is a city in Hungary and with a hire car you can make the hour and a half journey south west from the capital Budapest. Kaposvar is also a capital city of the county of Somogy and it was built on the banks of the Kapos River. More than 50,000 people live there.
The city has an interesting history dating back to the settlement of Celtic tribes, and many attractive buildings to see. These would have included a stone castle which was built in a rectangular shape during the 1400's but the building was destroyed in the 18th century by the holy Roman Emperor.
This was just one of many acts of violence which were waged on the city and it was also under siege by the Turkish and the Ottoman Empire. Of the buildings that have survived and are worth seeing there are the ruins of Benedictine Monastery of Kaposszentjakab, Kaposvår Town Hall and Dorottya house. Like many famous cities Kaposvar was founded on seven hills. In later years it became an important industrial city thanks to a railway line which connects to other parts of Hungary.
