Four-fifths of Honduras is mountain country indented with river valleys running down to the short Pacific coast in the south and the longer banana-growing Caribbean coast in the north. The capital, TEGUCIGALPA, is surrounded by mountains. Its name means 'silver hills' in a language of the Indians (Mayas) who lived there before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. The country became a fully independent republic in 1838. 

Ninety per cent of the 4.5 million Hondurans are mestizos - of mixed Spanish and Indian blood. The rest are of Indian or African origin. Most are peasants producing maize, rice and beans for their own use; only one-third of the people live in towns. Although education is free, half the people cannot read. 

The country is sparsely populated. It is five times as large as neighbouring El Salvador, but has a smaller population. Some areas of Honduras can only be reached by air. The forested and swampy Mosquitia in the far north-east has only one road. In this remote region the USA secretly train a guerrilla army of counter-revolutionaries (Contras) to fight the Communist Sandinista government in neighbouring Nicaragua.
