Chios is very close to the mainland of Turkey and several ferries travel between the two on a daily basis. Visitors to Chios have this option if they want to broaden their holiday horizons. The island is big enough to make a hire car useful for getting around as there are quite a few sights worth seeing.
Many spend the day driving up in the mountainous heartland of the island and looking down on the coast of Turkey from over 5,000 feet. The 11th century monastery of Nea Moni is another must see.
